Mumbles Pier

An 835ft long Victorian Pier located in the seaside village of Mumbles. Mumbles Pier was designed in the late 1890's by W. Sutcliffe Marsh. The construction of the pier started in 1898 at a cost of £17,000. It was completed in the same year, opening on the 10th of May 1898. The pier was promoted by John Jenkins of the then Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway.

The pier was devised as an incentive for people to use the Swansea to Mumbles railway (the worlds first passenger railway service). The railway actually terminated where the amusements and arcades are now.

In 1916 the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) walk and slipway was added onto the pier and the boathouse that sits on top of it was built six years later in 1922. These are still used today and help save many lives in and around the coastal area.

Ameco (Amusement Equipment Co. Ltd), the company that currently own the pier first came into the fold when they obtained a license from the Mumbles railway to operate the pier from the 1st of October 1937. Ameco later obtained a lease and eventually acquired the freehold of the pier in 1957. Since then Ameco have continued to invest money into the maintenance and restoration of the pier. In 1966 an amusement and arcade was built at the front of the pier, maintaining the piers attraction to visitors.

Today, the pier is still as popular as ever. Although parts of the decking are going through renovation and restoration, it is still open to the public and helps to attract tourism to the area.

Overall, Mumbles pier is well worth a visit. It is a tribute to Victorian architecture and offers spectacular panoramic views across Swansea.
